MARINDUQUE: The Beating Heart of the Philippines

Often called the “Heart of the Philippines,” Marinduque is more than a heart-shaped island. It sits near the geographic center of the archipelago and is home to the historic Luzon Datum of 1911¹, the reference point used for Philippine mapping for decades. During my recent trip, I discovered a destination filled with heritage, pristine beaches, mountain views, welcoming locals, and slow-paced island life. Although it is best known for the world-famous Moriones Festival, Marinduque also offers hidden gems such as Poctoy White Beach, Maniwaya Island, Pulang Lupa Shrine, Kawa-Kawa Falls, and relaxing cafés overlooking the countryside.

Consequently, travelers looking for authentic Filipino culture will find this island both refreshing and unforgettable.

I – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

• Geography and Terrain – Marinduque belongs to MIMAROPA Region and features rolling hills, Mt. Malindig, rivers, waterfalls, caves, and white-sand beaches.
• History & Heritage – The province played an important role during the Philippine-American War, remembered through the Battle of Pulang Lupa Shrine. It is also home to the Luzon Datum of 1911. The center of Philippine Geodetic system.
• Religion & Culture – Roman Catholic traditions remain strong, especially during Holy Week through the colorful Moriones Festival.²
• Economy & Craftsmanship – Fishing, agriculture, tourism, and handicrafts such as weaving and local delicacies support the local economy.

III – HOW TO GET THERE

Assuming your point of origin is Metro Manila

• Take a bus from Cubao or Pasay Terminal to Lucena Dahilacan Port
  • Travel Time: ~4-5hours
  • Travel Cost: ₱300–₱400
  • Bus Line: JAC Liner, DLTB, or JAM Transit
• From Dahilacan Port in Lucena, transfer to RoRo (Roll-On, Roll-Off) Boat to Balanacan Port
  • Travel Time: ~3-4hours
  • Travel Cost: ₱275–₱550
  • Ferry: Montenegro or Starhorse
• Upon arrival in Balanacan port, there are available Motorcycle or Habal-habal that will take you to point of interest. Estimated daily cost of tour is ₱800–₱1,500 (depends on how you bargain)

Whether you are chasing beaches, culture, or peaceful landscapes, Marinduque deserves a place on every traveler’s bucket list.
