Known as the ‘Home of the Winds,’ Batanes remains one of the most sought-after destinations in the country because of its untouched beauty, rich Ivatan culture, and breathtaking scenery.
This trip was especially meaningful because it completed my journey across all 82 Philippine provinces. From Clark to Basco, every moment felt like stepping into a postcard.

I – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Geography and Terrain: Batanes1 is the smallest province in the Philippines and consists of ten islands, with Batan2, Sabtang, and Itbayat being the main inhabited islands. Volcanic landscapes, grass-covered hills, cliffs, and rugged coastlines define its terrain.
- History & Heritage: The province has a long history shaped by indigenous Ivatan traditions, Spanish influence, and maritime trade routes3.
- Religion & Culture: Most residents are Roman Catholic. Ivatan culture emphasizes honesty, resilience, respect for nature, and community.
- Economy & Craftsmanship: Agriculture, fishing, tourism, livestock raising, and traditional weaving support the local economy.
- Interesting Facts: Batanes is closer to Taiwan than Manila, has some of the strongest typhoon-resistant houses in the Philippines, and is known for the famous Honesty Coffee Shop.

1. Municipality of BASCO (Batan Island)
Basco Lighthouse
Standing atop Naidi Hills, Basco Lighthouse is one of the most recognizable landmarks in Batanes. Built to guide vessels navigating the waters surrounding the province, it offers panoramic views of Basco town, the West Philippine Sea, and the rolling hills nearby. The lighthouse is particularly beautiful during sunset when golden light illuminates the coastline.
Vayang Rolling Hills
Often considered the postcard image of Batanes, Vayang Rolling Hills features vast grass-covered landscapes overlooking dramatic sea cliffs. The combination of emerald hills, grazing cattle, and endless ocean views creates a scene that feels almost unreal. It remains one of the most photographed locations in the province.
Valugan Boulder Beach
Unlike typical sandy beaches, Valugan Boulder Beach is covered with thousands of smooth volcanic boulders believed to have originated from ancient eruptions of Mt. Iraya. Powerful waves continuously shape the shoreline, creating a rugged and captivating landscape. Visitors are encouraged to admire the area respectfully as it holds cultural significance for many Ivatan communities.
Mt. Carmel Chapel
Perched on a hill overlooking Basco, Mt. Carmel Chapel is among the most picturesque churches in the Philippines. Its simple architecture complements the surrounding scenery, making it a favorite venue for intimate weddings and photography sessions. The peaceful atmosphere and sweeping views add to its charm.
PAGASA Radar Station
Located on elevated terrain, the PAGASA Radar Station plays an important role in weather monitoring and typhoon tracking. Aside from its operational significance, visitors appreciate the scenic viewpoints surrounding the facility.
Didawud Idjang (Basco Fortress)
This ancient natural fortress served as a defensive settlement for early Ivatan communities. Its strategic hilltop location provided protection from invaders and remains an important reminder of Batanes’ pre-colonial history.
Dipnaysuhuan Japanese Tunnel
Constructed during World War II, this tunnel reflects a significant chapter in Philippine history. It offers visitors a glimpse into wartime military activities in the northernmost province.
2. Municipality of MAHATAO (Batan Island)
Chawa Viewdeck
One of the most breathtaking coastal viewpoints in Batanes, Chawa Viewdeck overlooks towering cliffs and the crashing waves of the West Philippine Sea. The dramatic scenery makes it a favorite stop for photographers and nature lovers alike.
San Carlos Borromeo Church
Recognized as a National Cultural Treasure, this centuries-old stone church showcases Spanish colonial architecture adapted to withstand the harsh weather conditions of Batanes. It remains an active place of worship and a symbol of Ivatan faith.
Maywang a Libru du Vatan (Blank Book Archive)
This unique community archive invites visitors to write personal reflections, stories, prayers, and messages. Rather than preserving artifacts, it preserves thoughts and experiences, making it one of the most meaningful cultural attractions in the province.
Old Spanish Lamp Post
A remnant of the Spanish colonial era, this historic structure reflects the influence of Spanish settlement and governance in Batanes.
Spanish Blue Lagoon
A hidden coastal attraction featuring crystal-clear waters and striking rock formations. While often viewed from a distance during tours, it adds another layer of beauty to Mahatao’s coastline.
Maydangeb White Beach
This secluded white-sand beach offers a quieter alternative to more popular attractions. Its calm setting makes it ideal for relaxation and photography.
Mavatoy Hills
Known for its distinctive ridges resembling giant chocolate bars or Toblerone peaks, Mavatoy provides excellent panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
San Jose Bridge
Also called the Spanish Bridge, this historic structure highlights traditional engineering techniques and serves as a reminder of Batanes’ colonial past.
Tayid Lighthouse
Often overlooked by first-time visitors, Tayid Lighthouse is arguably one of the most scenic lighthouses in Batanes. Located on rugged cliffs facing the Pacific Ocean, it is best visited at sunrise when the first rays of light paint the landscape in vibrant colors.
3. Municipality of IVANA (Batan Island)
House of Dakay
Widely recognized as the oldest surviving stone house in Batanes, House of Dakay has endured countless typhoons and earthquakes. Built using traditional Ivatan construction methods, it symbolizes the resilience of local architecture.
Honesty Coffee Shop
Perhaps the most famous store in Batanes, Honesty Coffee Shop operates largely on a self-service system. Customers select items, leave payment, and take their change without supervision, reflecting the trust and integrity deeply rooted in Ivatan culture.
Ivana Port and Pasalubong Center
Serving as the primary gateway to Sabtang Island, Ivana Port also offers locally made souvenirs, handicrafts, and delicacies that showcase Ivatan craftsmanship.
4. Municipality of UYUGAN (Batan Island)
Motchong Viewpoint
A peaceful viewpoint overlooking rolling landscapes and coastal scenery. The tranquil atmosphere makes it an excellent stop for appreciating Batanes’ natural beauty.
National Museum of Batanes
Home to historical artifacts, traditional tools, photographs, and cultural exhibits, the museum provides valuable insights into Ivatan history and heritage.
Alapad Rock Formation (Blow Ur Horn)
This iconic roadside landmark features towering rock formations beside a narrow cliffside road. Motorists traditionally sound their horns before passing as a safety precaution, giving rise to its memorable nickname.
Madangay Viewpoint
A scenic overlook offering expansive views of coastal cliffs, hills, and surrounding seascapes.
Rakuh a Payaman (Marlboro Country)
One of the most famous attractions in Batanes, Rakuh a Payaman showcases endless green pastures overlooking the sea. The combination of grazing cattle, rolling hills, and ocean vistas creates one of the most iconic landscapes in the Philippines.
5. Municipality of SABTANG (Sabtang Island)
Morong Beach
Known for its powdery sand and turquoise waters, Morong Beach is among the most beautiful beaches in Batanes. It serves as the gateway to several nearby attractions.
Ahaw Natural Arch
This naturally formed limestone arch has become one of Sabtang’s most recognizable landmarks. Its striking shape and coastal setting make it a favorite photography location.
Savidug Village
A well-preserved Ivatan village where traditional stone houses with cogon roofs remain in use. Walking through the village feels like stepping back in time.
Old Spanish Beaterio
This historic religious structure highlights the enduring influence of Spanish missionaries in Batanes.
Chamantad–Tinyan Viewpoint
Offering one of the most dramatic panoramas in the province, this viewpoint overlooks steep cliffs, rolling hills, and the vast sea beyond.
Nayuva Beach
A peaceful beach often included as a lunch stop during island tours. Its calm surroundings provide a relaxing break between sightseeing activities.
III – HOW TO GET THERE
1. Via Clark International Airport (Pampanga)
Philippine Airlines operates direct flights to Basco. Typical roundtrip fares range from ₱14,000–₱28,000 depending on season. But during promo/sale this can be obtained between ₱7,000-₱15,000
2. Via Binalonan Airport (Pangasinan
Sky Pasada4 operates a charter plane. Although limited aviation services may occasionally be unavailable. Prices vary significantly but typical one way cost ₱18,000.
3. Via Tugegarao Airport (Cagayan)
Sky Pasada operates flights to Basco. Expect fares around ₱4,500-₱9,000.
IV – SAMPLE ITINERARY
We stayed in Batanes for 5 days and 4 nights, covering the islands of Batan and Sabtang. We had planned to visit Itbayat, but there were no available flights or boat rides at the time. It is important to book your trip to Itbayat in advance if you intend to include it in your itinerary.
Below is a sample detailed 3-day itinerary. Note: For first-time visitors to Batanes, booking through a travel agency is required. DIY trips are only recommended if you have extra free days or when you return to Batanes for a subsequent visit.
