Recognized as the 7th National Geological Monument of the Philippines, Biri Island showcases six massive rock formations that stand as natural sculptures where each is uniquely carved over time. These formations are surrounded by crystal-clear tidal pools, rugged cliffs, and panoramic ocean views that change color depending on the time of day.

Biri Island, located in the Municipality of Biri in Northern Samar. The northernmost province of Eastern Visayas, is a destination that rewards patience and curiosity1. Unlike mainstream Philippine beach destinations, Biri does not rely on powdery white sand or luxury resorts. Instead, it captivates travelers through its raw, dramatic landscapes shaped by millions of years of tectonic activity, powerful Pacific waves, and relentless coastal winds.

In a world dominated by commercialized destinations, Biri Island remains refreshingly untouched. There are no luxury resorts, no crowded beaches, and no overwhelming tourist infrastructure—only nature in its purest form. This is exactly why Biri continues to be one of the most underrated yet unforgettable destinations in the Philippines.

I – WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Geography & Terrain2 – Biri Island is characterized by rugged coastlines, dramatic rock formations, mangrove forests, and rolling hills. Facing the Pacific Ocean, the island experiences strong waves that continuously shape its unique geological features.
  • History & Heritage – Biri Island has been declared the 7th National Geological Monument of the Philippines, recognizing its rare and scientifically significant rock formations formed over millions of years.
  • Religion & Culture – The island is predominantly Roman Catholic. Locals are known for their warmth and simplicity, and their culture reflects a deep respect for nature and community traditions.
  • Economy & Craftsmanship – Fishing and small-scale farming are the main sources of livelihood. Tourism is gradually growing, providing additional income through guiding services, homestays, and local transport.

II – POINTS OF INTEREST

THE ROCK FORMATIONS

1. Macadlaw Rock Formation

A prime sunrise destination featuring towering limestone formations, dramatic coastal cliffs, and clear tide pools that reflect the morning light beautifully.

2. Magsapad Rock Formation

One of the most iconic spots on the island, known for its natural stone arch where waves crash underneath, creating a powerful and photogenic scene.

3. Magasang Rock Formation

Offers elevated viewpoints overlooking the Pacific Ocean, where strong waves continuously shape the rugged coastline.

4. Bel-At Rock Formation

A quieter and less crowded area with wide-open ocean views and uniquely shaped rock surfaces perfect for relaxed exploration.

5. Puhunan Rock Formation

Known for its accessible lagoons and calmer waters, making it an ideal stop for swimming and cooling off during the tour.

6. Caranas Rock Formation

Reached through a scenic mangrove walkway, this spot features natural pools and a peaceful atmosphere surrounded by coastal vegetation.

BUSAY HILL

Often referred to as the “Little Batanes of Biri,” this rolling hill offers a panoramic 360-degree view of the island and surrounding sea. It is best visited in the late afternoon, where the changing colors of the sky create a calm and scenic sunset experience.

BIRI TOWN PROPER

  • Vintage Galleon Anchor – A historical artifact believed to be from an old Spanish-era galleon, symbolizing the island’s connection to early maritime trade routes. It offers a glimpse into Biri’s lesser-known colonial past.
  • Biri Tourism Office – The official starting point for all visitors. Aside from registration, it serves as an information hub where travelers can arrange guides, learn about local regulations, and understand the significance of the island’s geological sites.
  • Biri Town Proper – The heart of the island’s community life, where you’ll find local eateries, small stores, and homestays. Walking around the town provides insight into the daily lives of residents and the island’s laid-back atmosphere.

III – HOW TO GET THERE

⚠️ Important Reminder: Regardless of your starting airport, all routes will lead to Lavezares Port, the jump-off point to Biri Island. From there, take a boat (banca) to Biri (60–90 minutes).

You have the option to choose to either ride a Banca with locals for ₱170 or hire a private boat costing ₱1,500 – ₱1,800. This cost is as of March 29, 2026, so expect slightly higher rate considering the oil price hikes.

🔥Additional TIP:

  • Ride buses before 6 AM or before noon to catch same-day boats
  • Some buses run night trips, but roads can be rough
  • Expect waiting time (this is part of the Biri experience)
